Tuesday’s meeting saw an important update from the UK’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty, making it crucial in the attempts to beat the virus and save lives....

By default, Windows 11 continues to download and install various updates automatically. You may not notice this is happening until you go to turn off your device, with a restart required for most updates to be applied. However, you might prefer to have more control over which updates are installed on your PC, and when downloads take place. Whether you just need a brief break from updates or something more permanent, here are four ways to turn off automatic updates in Windows 11....

There are two bugs here, but the first kicks in before you can even install it. In Microsoft’s official forums, several people say they haven’t been able to get the KB5012643 update running on their device. Some suggest the problems begin when installation begins, while the download freezes while in progress for others. The latter is what happened to user John Sedona, with Windows Update Troubleshooter even suggesting the problem was detected and fixed....

That’s certainly been the case since Windows 11 arrived on 5 October. The new OS is a free upgrade for all compatible devices, with frequent reminders of its benefits via TV ads, social media and within Windows 10 itself. However, it doesn’t appear to have had the desired effect – yet. According to a survey of more than 10 million PCs by IT Asset Management company Lansweeper, just 0.21% of all devices were running Windows 11....

This version is preinstalled with Google Play and select Google apps such as Gmail (any others that you require can be downloaded from the Play Store), and it removes all the Chinese-language apps and notifications you don’t understand....

Although it has been superceded, there’s really very little difference between the 4A and 5A. There’s a new metal body, but all the key specs are the same. The Xiaomi Redmi 4A has a higher-capacity battery at 3120mAh (against 3000mAh), but it’s also stuck on MIUI 8.5. The Redmi 5A, by comparison, runs MIUI 9.5. No, here AMD competes by offering more cores and threads at a similar price to Intel. We’ve tested the Ryzen 5 1600X against the Core i5-7600K because of their prices....

These chips are undoubtedly some of the fastest and most powerful to ever be offered to consumers and, although unobtainable for some people, they’re actually not that expensive considering the performance on offer. Sadly, F.A. Porsche passed away in 2012, but the company that carries his family name renamed Porsche Design Studio to Studio F. A. Porsche in his honour. This part of the larger Porsche SE group has designed all manner of hardware that’s not automotive, including luggage, metro transport systems, watches, sporting equipment, kitchen knives, a Huawei phone and even a Windows laptop. The AOC PDS241 and its PDS271 brother are the first fruits of their collusion with AOC, and it’s fascinating to see what designers from outside the consumer electronics sector can contribute to it....

Asus ROG Zephyrus S: Price and Availability High-end gaming laptops that don’t weigh as much as a tractor aren’t cheap. Having the world’s thinnest is something you’re going to need to splash out on. As such, the Zephyrus S (GX531) starts at £1,999 which is a little higher than Razer’s new Blade 15 starting at £1,699 – with lower specs, though. It’s actually a lot cheaper than the Zephyrus GX501 we recently reviewed, which costs £2,799....

The Asus USB-AC56 is a wireless 802. 11ac adaptor designed to offer a simple way to add the latest 802. 11ac wireless capability to your laptop (or PC). See all Wi-Fi and Networking reviews. Unlike some models, the Asus USB-AC56 uses external high-gain antennae. This should improve performance, especially if combined with the two additional internal antennae listed in the specification. While this is a very small package into which to cram so many antennae it may provide a boost in speed using wireless diversity and beam-forming technology....

The X550LDV wasn’t listed on the company’s site at the time of this review, but is one of the first to step up to the newer Haswell processor line.
